I wish you a Happy Thanksgiving. I know it is a little early for the specific day but it is never too early to be thankful.
I also know many people celebrate the history of Thanksgiving. However, some people do not think we should celebrate that history because of the treatment of Native Americans.
My celebration of thanksgiving is independent of the first Thanksgiving. I believe it is good to have a day set aside to focus on being thankful. I even think it is good to be thankful every day.
A bed, a roof, ample food is enough to put me on my knees in thanksgiving. (If I can get up, I am even more thankful.)
When I add the absence of bombs, health of children and grandchildren, good friends, health care, freedom of worship, transportation, electricity, education, entertainment, clothing choices, computers and much more, I am deeply humbled. The advantages I have are staggering.
I hope and pray all of you have a very Happy Thanksgiving. I will be at the beach and will not write a blog next week.
I was going to discuss Jan 6, but after I wrote the Thanksgiving section, I decided to focus on the positive. A very positive aspect of my life and Jeny’s is a special community.
The Power of Love. One of the most positive parts of our lives has been a Christian Community for intellectually limited people. Fifty years ago, a L’Arche community was founded in Mobile. Recently the community became the First Light Community of Mobile.
The concept of the community is that rather than an institution with paid employees, people without handicaps would welcome the core members into a loving home.
I have seen in others and experienced in myself deep love in numerous interactions in that community – – truly a loving community. I am thankful for the friendships and experiences I have had with the community.
They had a celebration of 50 years last weekend. As a tribute to the love experienced in the community, people who have previously lived in the community came from all over the world for the celebration.
Jeny and I attended a dinner as a part of the celebration. One statement stood out for me. Marty O’Malley the long-time head of the local community reported that they have had several deaths of core members over the 50 years. He reported that all but one of those core members exceeded life expectancy by over 20 years. That message of the power of love deeply moved me. It is a wonderful message for the community but also a message of the power of love for all of us.
