Mailchimp had technical difficulties again last week. The following was intended for last week.

Assassinations. It is hard to face but the attempt on former President Trump’s life is not a rare event. Assassinatio attempts are more common than we would like to think.

Assassinations in my lifetime:

Killed:

Nov. 22, 1963 President John F Kennedy

February 1, 1965 Malcolm X.

April 4, 1968 Martin Luther King Jr.

June 5, 1968 Robert Kennedy.

Attempts:

Nov. 1, 1950 President Harry Truman.

If you are not familiar with this attempt, here is a reference

December 11,1960 car bomb intended for President Kennedy.

May 15, 1972 George Wallace, shot.

February 22, 1974 Richard Nixon, hijacked plane.

September 5, 1975 Gerald Ford, shot at.

September 22, 1975 Gerald Ford, shot at.

March 30, 1981 Ronald Reagan, shot.

1993 George H. W. Bush bomb plot.

January 8, 2011 Gabby Giffords, shot.

November 11, 2011 Barrack Obama, shots fired at the White House.

June 14 2017 Steve Scalese, shot.

2018 Barrack Obama, Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton were mailed pipe bombs.

July 14, 2024 Donald Trump, shot.

These are just the very public figures. The list of public figures would be much longer if I included assassinations of judges, district attorneys and the police.

In America other assignations regularly occur. They are caused by drugs, gangs, romance and revenge.

We are a violent nation.

No Dialog. As I have said many times, the keys to dialog are the ability to acknowledge strengths in the other side and weaknesses in my own before finding fault in the other side. Our difficulty to be willing to examine our own failures is clearly shown in my favorite question by Jesus: “Why do you look at the sawdust in your brother’s eye and ignore the plank in your own.”

I saw this difficulty in the rhetoric after the attempted assignation on Trump.  Both sides claiming the other incited violence with very  little to no admission of personal responsibility for the encouragement of violence by either side.

President Biden did say he should not have used the phrase “Trump is in the bullseye” to a group of donors. It was a poor choice of a metaphor.

We have a friend who lost a substitute teaching job for pointing her fingers at a student like a gun. If a rule that stringent about violent rhetoric were enforced on our politicians, the Congress would be a lonely place.

In my opinion, we are becoming separate tribes. We must find leaders who will unify our nation or we will be torn asunder.

Sunscreen. Knee jerk, one-way thinking again reared it’s ugly head recently. I saw a video of an “influencer” telling young people not to use sunscreen. Sunscreen was bad for them. A good summary of the misinformation is in the following:  ‘It’s frightening:’ How social media distorts the truth about sun exposure | CNN.

When I heard it, I thought it was all wrong. What I learned is — I should use sunscreen but not all sunscreens are good for me. I need to be careful and examine which one I use. SOME sunscreens have dangerous chemicals.
